Bunk Beds Just Got Better – Stairway Bunks

The kids want a bunk bed and you would like to free up some extra space in their room. However, the thought of them climbing the ladder has you a bit nervous. Kids can usually climb stairs well before they can climb a ladder. Stairway bunk beds or stair step bunks give you the option of having a bunk bed without a ladder. Instead, stair steps are incorporated into the bed frame.   What are the benefits and drawbacks of a stairway bunk bed? Here are some points to consider about stair step bunks...

Probably the number one benefit of this type of bed is that steps are a little safer to navigate than a ladder making these especially good for younger children. Kids still need to be careful but there is less of a chance of slipping on steps. Just because the kids can climb steps earlier than a ladder doesn’t mean they should be allowed to use the top bunk at a younger age. Unfortunately, parents often take this safety recommendation lightly. Six and up is the recommended age for the top bunk and it is risky not to adhere to that recommendation.

Stair steps are encased and add support to the overall frame of the bed. Instead of four posts supporting the bed, you have essentially a dresser at one end and two posts at the other. More stability in the overall frame of the bed is an obvious plus for added safety... 

Most styles incorporate built-in storage drawers under the steps and sometimes on the end of the bed too.   Depending on the particular stairway bunk you choose, the storage drawers and cubbies may eliminate your need for an extra piece of furniture such as a dresser or chest of drawers.

On some styles, you have the option to add an extension kit to the bottom bunk making it a full size bed. If at times, two twin size beds aren’t enough to accommodate all the sleepers in your house, this option is available even with the stair step bunks.

One possible drawback is that they require more space in the room than a standard bunk bed. But, if they eliminate the need for other furniture, they make take up the same or less space than a separate bed and a separate dresser. You need to measure your room to be sure the bed will fit. Since the overall dimensions are larger, these type beds may not work in a very small bedroom.

Due to the fact that the raw materials cost more in a larger bed, these bunks will be more expensive. Here again, they may not be any more expensive as one piece than if you had to buy a bunk bed and a dresser.
